About Us

The North Delta Shotokan Karate Club was started by Alan Kazuta in June, 1984 after practicing for thirteen years at the University of British Columbia Karate Club under the instruction of Norman Welch (President, Canada Shotokan Karate), Don Gee and Don Jurchuk.

Practices led by Ching Wee (Dojo leader) and his seniors, Alan Kazuta and Gurmail Gill are held at the North Delta Recreation Centre. A youth class was added in 1990 which currently accepts students from age 8 - 14.

On June 6, 2004 the North Delta dojo celebrated its 20th anniversary with an exchange practice led by Norman Welch followed by a barbecue for all participants, past members, family and friends. (see photo gallery).

As a Canada Shotokan Karate dojo, North Delta follows the teachings of Master Gichin Funakoshi, considered the primary "founder" of modern karate and Mr. Tsutomu Ohshima, a direct student of Master Funakoshi and founder of Shotokan Karate of America. Mr. Ohshima is also recognized as chief instructor of many other Shotokan organizations around the world.

We welcome new members throughout the year to join us in practicing traditional martial arts.
